The 2026 Ballon d’Or race has produced a strong group of candidates, with goals, trophies, World Cup performances and individual influence all playing a role. The official 30-man shortlist includes stars such as Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, Ousmane Dembélé and Rodri.
Based on performances during the award period, here is an early top-four ranking.
1. Harry Kane – Bayern Munich
Harry Kane has been selected as one of the best prospects for winning the prize. According to The Guardian, the England striker has recorded 61 goals in 51 games with Bayern Munich this season. He also played an important role for England and Bayern in the Bundesliga championship.
Kane has goals, he has passing, he has movement and he has the ability to bring other players in to attacks.
He also advanced as far as the later stages of both the Champions League and World Cup. So, if they put him in the measure of individual achievement, Kane has an excellent claim.
2. Rodri – Spain
Rodri's case is different, as it's not goals which primarily measure his influence. The midfielder controls the pace of games, helps his team keep possession and provides protection in front of the defence.
He came back to his winning ways and was a key figure in Spain's World Cup victory in 2026. He was ranked second by the Guardian in terms of power.
His problem is that his campaign at Manchester City wasn't as successful as some have previously made it. However, his World Cup game is a serious case.
3. Kylian Mbappé – Real Madrid
Mbappé is still one of the most prolific forwards in world football. He appeared 42 times for La Liga and the Champions League with 40 goals struck on during the 2025–26 season, according to The Guardian.
He also became the all-time leading scorer of the World Cup and had the Goldene Boot at the World Cup.
The key issue with his case is winning or not. While his personal statistics are good, Real Madrid didn't pocket the largest prizes of the season.
4. Lamine Yamal – Barcelona
Lamine Yamal is already a huge name in the game of European football at just 19 years of age. The Guardian reports that he contributed 41 goals in 45 appearances for Barcelona this season in all competitions.
Yamal was also a part of Spain's World Cup-winning team. But injuries hampered his preparation and he was only able to contribute a small amount during the tournament itself.
His achievements are even more noteworthy given his age, but his entire profile may well be a little less impressive than Kane's, Rodri's and Mbappé's.
What Could Decide the Award?
The Ballon d'Or is more than just about goals. Individual performance, team successes and sporting conduct are all part of France Football's criteria.
The men's award is voted for by journalists from the top 100 FIFA ranked countries. This makes it hard to assess the final outcome by statistical measures.
Early Ranking
